Our Story

Edwards Wines are the embodiment of an enduring spirit of adventure and an unwavering quest for excellence.

HISTORY

In 1990, vineyard founder Brian Edwards piloted his 1943 Tiger Moth Matilda across the world from England to Australia in what became one of the epic solo flights in the annals of aviation and an epic journey for charity.

It was the flight of a passionate man and his redoubtable flying machine. His epic flight ended in Perth, and he and his wife Jenny purchased land in nearby Margaret River to begin another journey, planting and building the Edwards estate and their family

Today Matilda holds pride of place at our Margaret River Cellar Door as a reminder that there is no limit to what can be accomplished through passion, determination and if the heart is right.

Brian’s pioneering presence and passion to reach for the sky lives on through the award-winning wines produced at Edwards. Our Wine is a tribute to both of them.

VITICULTURE

Brian and Jenny Edwards purchased the property in 1991 for three main reasons,

  • The classic gravel loams which would be perfect for growing grapes
  •  The amount of water which could be captured in the valleys.
  • Brian knew he could fit an airstrip at the back of property.

In 1993 Brian and Jenny’s son Christo moved down from Perth and the first plantings 2.5ha of Semillon went in. More plantings followed throughout the 90s , which included Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet. In the spring of 2023 new varieties have been planted including Merlot, Grenache, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This will bring the area planted to a total of 22 ha.

Great care is taken in the planning and running of the vineyard to ensure the best quality of fruit is produced. All varieties are shoot thinned in spring to open up the canopies, and to allow for the low yielding vines to increase in fruit flavour and colour intensity. Organic practices are used on the vineyard with vines being sprayed in summer with a blend of Sulfur, fish emulsion and kelp.

VITICULTURE

Fruit is delivered to winemaker Jonathan Mettam where he uses his years of experience and finesse to produce wines of the highest quality.

WINEMAKING

With Edwards being located in the heart of the Margaret River region, our planted grape varieties thrive owing to the region’s exceptional blend of Mediterranean climate, proximity to the ocean, and diverse soil types. This synergy results in a long growing season, ensuring the grapes ripen evenly, leading to the production of high-quality wines.

Once harvested, our estate grown fruit is expertly handcrafted by our winemaker, Jonathan Mettam, using his 30 years of experience and a blend of traditional and modern winemaking techniques, to create a suite of delicious wines. Each wine has a signature of the harmonious balance attained in the vineyard, and that harmony is continued in the winery through gentle processing, careful selection of oak, and meticulous attention to detail.

These exquisite wines are now being enjoyed throughout Australia and all around the world.

OCEANS SERIES

At present, there are around 500 bottles of Edwards Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon undergoing a 12-month maturation process at a depth of 18 meters in the Southern Ocean’s Flinders Bay, Augusta.

While submerging wine bottles underwater may not be a conventional practice in the wine industry, many winemakers and enthusiasts have been exploring this innovative method that is believed to create an exceptional ageing environment capable of enhancing wine’s flavour and aroma. When executed appropriately, with adequately sealed glass bottles, the water’s constant temperature and pressure can help maintain the wine’s freshness and prevent oxidation, resulting in a smoother and more balanced taste. Additionally, the underwater environment provides the ideal atmosphere, with the absence of light and oxygen, as well as natural temperature regulation, which can help preserve the wine’s colour and aroma.

Bottles are available for purchase directly through our Cellar Door. These will be ready for purchase from November 3oth.
