Our Story

Edwards Wines are the embodiment of an enduring spirit of adventure and an unwavering quest for excellence.

HISTORY

In 1990, vineyard founder Brian Edwards piloted his 1943 Tiger Moth Matilda across the world from England to Australia in what became one of the epic solo flights in the annals of aviation and an epic journey for charity.

It was the flight of a passionate man and his redoubtable flying machine. His epic flight ended in Perth, and he and his wife Jenny purchased land in nearby Margaret River to begin another journey, planting and building the Edwards estate and their family

Today Matilda holds pride of place at our Margaret River Cellar Door as a reminder that there is no limit to what can be accomplished through passion, determination and if the heart is right.

Brian’s pioneering presence and passion to reach for the sky lives on through the award-winning wines produced at Edwards. Our Wine is a tribute to both of them.

VITICULTURE

Brian and Jenny Edwards purchased the property in 1991 for three main reasons,

  • The classic gravel loams which would be perfect for growing grapes
  •  The amount of water which could be captured in the valleys.
  • Brian knew he could fit an airstrip at the back of property.

In 1993 Brian and Jenny’s son Christo moved down from Perth and the first plantings 2.5ha of Semillon went in. More plantings followed throughout the 90s , which included Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet. In the spring of 2023 new varieties have been planted including Merlot, Grenache, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This will bring the area planted to a total of 22 ha.

Great care is taken in the planning and running of the vineyard to ensure the best quality of fruit is produced. All varieties are shoot thinned in spring to open up the canopies, and to allow for the low yielding vines to increase in fruit flavour and colour intensity. Organic practices are used on the vineyard with vines being sprayed in summer with a blend of Sulfur, fish emulsion and kelp.

VITICULTURE

Fruit is delivered to winemaker Jonathan Mettam where he uses his years of experience and finesse to produce wines of the highest quality.

WINEMAKING

With Edwards being located in the heart of the Margaret River region, our planted grape varieties thrive owing to the region’s exceptional blend of Mediterranean climate, proximity to the ocean, and diverse soil types. This synergy results in a long growing season, ensuring the grapes ripen evenly, leading to the production of high-quality wines.

Our first vintage in 1999 was produced by Brian’s eldest son and winemaker, Michael, who oversaw the wine making for 17 years.

At present, our estate-grown fruit is expertly handcrafted into wine by Jonothan Mettam, who draws on his 30 years of experience and combines both traditional and contemporary winemaking techniques. Each wine has a signature of the harmonious balance attained in the vineyard, and that harmony is continued in the winery through gentle processing, careful selection of oak, and meticulous attention to detail. These exquisite wines are now being enjoyed throughout Australia and all around the world.

Oceans Series

OCEANS SERIES

From the vines of Margaret River, to the depths of Flinders Bay.

In 1998, divers found thousands of Champagne bottles in a shipwreck from 1916 in the Baltic Sea. When opened, the wine was still drinkable—and surprisingly delicious. This discovery inspired the idea of aging wine underwater.

The ocean acts like a natural cellar. Its steady temperature and pressure help keep the wine fresh and smooth, while gentle currents slowly move the bottles, improving the aging process. In total darkness, without extra oxygen, the wine keeps its colour, flavour, and aroma.

Our bottles are sealed, placed in crates, and lowered 18 metres into the ocean at Flinders Bay, Augusta. There, they age for 12 months in cool, stable conditions. When brought back up, each bottle looks like a piece of ocean treasure—beautifully aged and marked by the sea.

Oceans Series can be purchased directly from our Cellar Door or you can contact us to arrange delivery.
