Vintage Summary (the finale)

Posted on May 07, 2013 by Eddie & Ed | 0 comments

Vintage is over with the last of the reds coming in over the Easter weekend. The quality is looking fantastic overall, with both whites and reds showing intense rich flavours.

Sauvignon blanc and cabernet crops were a little down on last year due to strong winds and storms during the flowering period in November, but generally yields have been good.

The hard work has started in the winery with regular pump overs and plunging, digging out of tanks and pressing off the shiraz and cabernet this week. This work is often done by our burly men with their shirts off, but I'm disappointed to report that the sudden cold change has prevented that so far.

Beside all the activity, everything around here is smelling quite delish! Here's to the 2013 wines!

Vintage Summary 2013

Posted on February 08, 2013 by Eddie & Ed | 0 comments

It’s shaping up to be a fantastic vintage - hot, hot summer days are likely to bring harvest forward a week or two earlier than usual. Our 'go-to' guy, and Christo's right hand man "Byrnesy", tested a few chardy grapes earlier this week and they are currently at 10 Be (baume). For those who don't speak viticulture, that's the sugar level of the grapes, and ideally we'll pick at 12.5 Be which should only be about 2 weeks away at most. The flavour profile will also be thoroughly checked at this time by the discerning palates of Mike and Christo to ensure that the resulting grape juice makes a wine that will be remembered.

Plenty of blossoms in the red gums are keeping the little (but sometimes destructive) Silver-Eyes satisfied so they don't have to resort to pillaging the grapes. The white grapes are harvested in the early hours of the morning (we're talking 1am-ish) to preserve their freshness and will take about two weeks to harvest. Hopefully the sun will continue to shine so the reds can be picked soon after, however the yields might be down slightly on last year due to storm damage late last year.

A Perfect Match?

Posted on February 02, 2013 by Eddie & Ed | 0 comments

For all you ‘foodies’ out there, we would love you to share your expertise and opinions with us by matching delicious edibles with our wines. Grab a slice of fame and guide the hungry masses by having your thoughts featured in our Perfect Match section, found alongside each of our wines.

It can be a recipe, a favourite meal from your favourite restaurant (sure, give them a plug – we’ll even include a link!), or something delectable you discovered at your local deli, that you enjoyed with one of our wines.

We can’t feature images in that section but we’re happy to show them off in our blog when we tell everyone how fabulous you are…just like I am about to with Scott and Lola…

Scott and Lola have been loyal Club Members for quite some time, and Scott has earned himself the tag of “Brand Ambassador” for his infatuation with our BCE, and for sharing his love of this wine to any who will listen. These two are soon to be married (because they are a Perfect Match) and could teach ‘romance’ to the French. They contributed the yummy recipe Poulet au Porto from Julia Child, for our 2008 BCE.

Email your material to info@edwardswines.com.au :-)

Matilda inspires a Retro Point of View

Posted on January 29, 2013 by Eddie & Ed | 1 comment

Sarah Taylor from Red Leopard Photography is going against the usual trends of capturing the emaciated model with the jutting jaw line and pouty lips, but instead has a passion for capturing the 'real woman'. She has beautifully tapped into an era where the luscious feminine curves were embraced as the norm, and the modest but quietly confident woman was greatly desired.

Last month Lydia accompanied Sarah to Edwards, while Matilda sat quietly and absorbed all this extra attention (secretly, she loved it!). Lydia channelled her inner aviator and Sarah worked her magic, and the results speak for themselves.

Sarah can be contacted here for her latest packages - an afternoon of pampering and creating life-long memories. If it’s not something you would take up for yourself, wouldn’t it make a fabulous gift?

Her next shoot with Matilda is on February the 3rd from 1pm and unfortunately this package is fully sold out, understandably as a few hours of ‘specialness’ like this don’t come by every day.

Earlier in the year Matilda was also chuffed to have a visitor (almost) from her era by the name of “Franki”. This 1927 air-cooled 11B Franklin Sedan swung by for a visit while on Leg 4 of her trip around Australia on the Franklin Round Australia Trek. 'Pilots and Navigators' David, Neil, Geoff and Gary are raising funds and awareness for Careflight.

From CareFlight's website: CareFlight is dedicated to providing the highest standard of rapid response critical care to the ill and injured. Our specially trained doctors, nurses and paramedics use helicopters, fixed wing aircraft and road ambulances to bring a hospital level of care to our patients. As a charity, we rely on community support to deliver our life-saving service.

How do these relate to anything “wine” you ask? They don’t.

But check them out!

Alright, so you know most of the crew here love their wine but also have salt water flowing in their veins – surfing is second nature, so these fins are not only AWESOME but very important in the every day scheme of things.

These leopard print Moonrakerr™ 3DFins were gifted to my son Solly, sized perfectly for his board so that he could try them out and give his expert (grommet) opinion. All part of the sales and marketing of these fins, very serious stuff.

It’s not just the cool colours that make these things eye-catching. They’re engineered with a sweet feature; the outer surface on the side fins and both sides of the rear, have a ridged pattern that resembles a golf ball, which also provided the inspiration. What does this all translate to? Science partnered with surf (we knew the cool guys were really nerds all along!) and this ‘dimple’ technology will lead to less drag with more speed and tail lift, so escaping out of a roaring tube intact will be a breeze.

For all you other wine lovers who also love the surf, keep an eye out for these!

I'm UGLY, and I need help!

Posted on December 06, 2012 by Eddie & Ed | 0 comments

Our Cellar Door Crew were recently thanked for being U.G.L.Y. Not your usual compliment but thankfully they didn't take offense. It's the Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You fundraising initiative by The Leukaemia Foundation – see more below.

From their website http://www.ugly.org.au/how-we-help

"Blood cancer is ugly"

Every day, 31 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma and together, blood cancer is Australia’s second biggest cause of cancer death. Blood cancer can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time. In aggressive cases, treatment begins within 24 hours.

For regional Aussies, it means leaving work, school and family and relocating to the city for treatment. And because treatment is usually longer than for other cancers, it can take a greater toll. Families can suddenly find themselves in crippling financial circumstances if the person or their carer is also the major breadwinner.

Every $80 we raise can provide a regional family with a fully furnished 'home away from home' for one night near a major hospital if they have to move to be closer to treatment. All of our services are free of charge and we want it to stay that way.  That's a beautiful thing isn't it? And because we receive no ongoing government funding, your fundraising is really important.”

For the month of September and October, we contributed $1 from every bottle of our Edwards wine label sold. So, a massive thank you to all our lovers of Edwards Wines; you helped us raise $2,454.00 dollars to contribute to this important cause. Collectively over $1.16 million was raised by all participants which is equivalent to funding 14,536 nights of free accommodation to regional families during their treatment in the city.
